it's a funny thing when you don't remember whether you're shooting black & white or color.

these look nice in black & white

but they would have been SUPERIOR in color (esp. the rainbow photo)

i try to consider photographing experiences and memory

and catching and missing moments

to happen with photography and life at the same time

the vivid and the colorless worlds

that's tough to swallow maybe

i feel like i've been in denial about losing our lease on the garfield building.
i suppose all good things come to an end

but for those that aren't familiar with it or don't live in slc
my studio and an art center that cara and i founded and curated
as well as an amazing youth art program
were housed in an abandoned building on the east side of town

come july we have to move on from it

my time in Salt Lake City is always so wonderful

end of the first semester, two more to go.

for whatever reason i've always gone about things backwards
i dropped out of college to start a gallery, an art magazine, an art center, and an art career
and now i'm going back to college to finally get my undergraduate art degree

now after i wrote and directed a feature film
i just got around to taking intro to film and a screenwriting class
kind of foolish i guess

there is this strange period that i usually go through after finishing a big project.

i think it's a common thing

a lull

temporary depression

but this is the first time i don't have it

i think i'm actually too busy to come down

moving from one project to the next

the book needs to be to the printer by thursday

and then back to my long list of projects

it's called The Trouble With Being Young
this is the first show title i've had where people respond exactly the same
they all stop to ask "What is the trouble with being young?"

it's nice
dialogue is welcome

even if it only leads to "I'll tell you what the trouble with being old is!"

i'm trying to stay optimistic about returning to college to complete my art degree.
my first semester back ends in a month
i dropped out seven or eight years ago with only a year of school left
since then my life has been very busy, which might be the cause of my outlook on art school
unfortunately i feel surrounded by students that could care less
and burnt out professors
that have been teaching too long
at a program that is beaten, bruised, and terribly outdated
a university art program striving for pure mediocrity

i guess going back to school is slightly redundant at this point, but it's a family thing

my studio, that i share with cara, happens to be in an old elementary school
it's mostly abandoned all except a wonderful youth art program tucked in one corner

she told me she comes from a small village
on the polish border of germany
during the war, her village was taken over
now, it nearly doesn't exist

i've decided to go back to school to finish my art degree.
so far, it's silly, interesting, stupid, exciting, and tiresome
kind of all at once

i think because i'm coming at it from an entirely different perspective
than when i was younger
it's easy for me to see the faults of the art department
but also to see the advantages of general university education
